Wordpress 2.0.1: Blogging Pleasure

« Previous // Next »

Wordpress 2.0.1 has finally been released! I decided to give it another try now that alot of the bugs have been worked out. This time, however, I set up a test database and domain for the installation which I should have done the first time around.

Installation

First of all, I backed up my database as suggested then decided to do a fresh install of version 2.0.1 instead of the upgrade. I removed all the files except my themes, plugins, .htaccess and wp-config.php and uploaded the new version. Thats all I had to do to get this section back up and running, the only job left to do was run the upgrade script to be able to login wordpress. You will get this message as the database is configured to work with 1.5.x and needs to be reconfigured. To my delight everything when without a hitch!

More Testing

On my test site, the first thing I checked was how adding new posts would affect my layout. In the previous experience, adding or editing posts severely altered my page layout so I had my fingers crossed. Everything seemed to be working correctly. Even adding tags that gave me so many problems before.

Bugs found so far

The only real bug I have found is with the WYSIWYG editor.

Within FireFox, anything typed within the visual rich editor will not show up when switched to the html source editor.

A real pain for me as I'm typing this in Dreamweaver as we speak. Over in Internet Explorer, the visual rich editor shows the html just fine when switched to html mode so not all is lost.

Disabling WYSIWYG (visual rich editor) and using the html source editor

Another quickfix for this besides using a 3rd part editor is to disable the WYSIWYG editor. To do this, click on "Users," then at the bottom under "Personal Options," uncheck "Use the visual rich editor when writing." This enables the html source to be shown as default.

In Conclusion…

I'm happy with this version so far but it's early days. Everything seems to be functional though which is certainly a big improvement on 2.0. The wordpress crew definately did a better job this time around with excellent user support. Now we wait for version 2.1...
