WordPress 2: Blogging Nightmare

« Previous // Next »

As a word of warning, if you use WordPress for your blog, refrain from upgrading to version 2.0. There are many bugs, especially with writing and posting content. I would suggest waiting until version 2.1 has been released with many of the major bugs worked out.

Editing Problems

I upgraded to WordPress (wp) version 2.0 a couple days ago and everything seemed to work fine after checking links, styles and content. It wasn't until I tried to modify a post that I found that something was terribly wrong. Firstly the html editor doesn't work in Firefox 1.5, nor was I able to edit a hyperlink. I switched over to Internet Explorer hoping to make my quick adjustment. I was able to edit the source code so all was jolly in the land of wordpress... Still dreaming. Random bits of html were thrown into my post, especially with the <abbr> tag: </abbr> was replaced with < /> and not even around the word I wanted abbreviated. Obviously < /> wasn't valid so I had whole paragraphs abbreviated.

Creating post Problems

As if that wasn't enough, a post I created somehow managed to rearrange all my content throughout the whole blog... the content was in the sidebar! At this point I'd had enough and decided to go back to version 1.5. Didn't anyone test this before it got released??? Here's a full list of all the problems so far.

Downgrading to 1.5

Luckily for me I backed everything up before the upgrade as suggested. I had to import my database to overwrite changes made from version 2.0 (if you delete the wp 2.0 files and upload your backed up 1.5 files, everything was out of synch. Unknown to me at the time there is a downgrade script to make things easier, which you can get here.

NB. If you deleted the wp 2.0 files and just uploaded your wp 1.5 files (as I did), the downgrade script will not work.

If you exported your database using phpMyAdmin then you can import everything back in. I selected my database and deleted the wp tables one by one just to be sure I didn't miss anything. Click on 'SQL' on the tabbed menu at the top and browse for your backup. Click go and your database should be back in there with no hassle. WordPress and your database will now be able to communicate once again.

In Conclusion...

I can't stress enough, wait for version 2.1. I can only imagine all the webmasters out there trying to fix all the problems generated by this. With what seems to be a rushed release, security comes to mind. If there are so many bugs uncovered already, lets hope none of the future ones are to do with hacker exploits. The people at WordPress will have surely lost trust for releasing a nightmare to the blogging community. What a palavour.

  1. […] Note also from DESIGNLEGION that you must run the downgrading plugin under 2.0 After it’s done successful then try overwriting 2.0 files with 1.5.2. […]

  3. […] Wordpress 2.0.1 has finally been released! I decided to give it another try now that alot of the bugs have been worked out. This time, however, I set up a test database and domain for the installation which I should have done the first time around. […]
