Prototype skin for Windowblinds

« Previous // Next »

Building on from my KDE theme, I've created my first full skin for the Windows OS.

A job and a half

You never fully know how much time it takes to skin every component in Windows until you're actually doing it. The design and photoshop work were the easiest parts. From there on it transforms in to a tedious trial and error process, making sure every element looks and behaves the way it should.

On the bright side the SkinStudio software worked like a charm and has a very short learning curve. Although windowblinds was prone to errors with all the skin reloading but nothing a restart couldn't fix.

After a couple of months it neared completion with just the finishing touches to add. I was staggered by the response when I actually released it.

Reap the rewards

There is nothing better than seeing all your hard work pay off. I released the skin on DeviantArt to great response and gained the DeviantArt holy grail in the form of a 'Daily Deviation.' Even now after one month, Prototype is the 5th most popular Windowblind skin of all time.
