Dreamweaver 8: Synchronize Problem

« Previous // Next »

The Synchronize Feature

Program: Macromedia Dreamweaver 8

Problem 1: Site not synching up
Problem 2: Synchronize dialog box disappears

The syncrhonize feature in Dreamweaver 8 enables the local and remote versions of the website to be synched up and remain consistant.

The Problem

When I first installed Dreamweaver, the synchronize feature would not synchronize my site. Instead the window popped up and disappeared straight away. After tweaking and testing some settings I was able to get the feature to function properly. Dreamweaver was not reading my file permissions for the remote and local sites or it reset them. The remote and local versions were in read-only mode which prevented the sync.

Resolutions for the local site

In the 'Files' panel, right click the top level of the tree directory and click 'Turn off read-only.'

Resolutions for the remote site

Enlarge the 'Files' panel so the remote site can be seen, right click the top level of the tree directory and click 'Set Permissions.' A diolog box will open with options for read, write and execute. Click 'read all,' 'write all' and 'execute all' and close the dialog box.

Resolutions for disappearing dialog boxes

If dialog boxes disappeared, I found a simple alt-tab through the open applications back to Dreamweaver fixed the problem. Sometimes this wouldn't work either so a restart of the program fixed the issue. Dreamweaver 8 seems a little buggy with the synch feature. Updates to follow.

  1. Excellent info! Thanks!

  2. Glad it helped! Your welcome.

  3. In regards to the disappearing dialog box, I’ve discovered that the dialog box isn’t gone, it is simply behind other windows. Dreamweaver 8 introduced background file activity, so the dialog is no longer always on top.

On a Mac, you can find the window by right-clicking (crtl-clicking) on the dreamweaver icon in the dock and selecting “Background File Activity…”

On a PC the “Background File Activity…” dialog should show up in the taskbar somewhere.

  4. Thanks soooo much
